The Bench With the Pearl
Lisa Gremm & Louisa Richter
A furniture piece which provides a modern interpretation of past experiences. Inspired by recurring elements in Jan Vermeer‘s works, in particular the color, form and material language of his artwork Girl with a Pearl Earring (c. 1665), a modern piece of furniture is created that tells a new, contemporary story.
By translating certain elements of the artwork into three-dimensional objects we materialize the girl‘s aura in our furniture. Therefore, we think beyond the picture‘s frame and give the girl a furniture that allows to sit down next to her, following her inviting expression. We mark the girl‘s imaginary spot by an upholstery and her turban is thus translated into an interactive textile element that is connected to the upholstery and can be used as a blanket. The girl‘s mystical pearl earring serves as a connecting element of the lower construction and is highlighted by a different color. In an interplay of color, shape and material, The Bench With the Pearl transfers experiences from a bygone era into the present and tells a new, contemporary story with many unique details.
