MESA
Verena Witthuhn
Verena grew up in the country side and was raised with high environmental awareness. Today as a designer she believes that contemporary design has the opportunity to be regenerative and circular. She has developed a creative method, enabling nature-inspired and spontaneous design practice, that allows her to work outside, where she has free access to materials, natural light and an open workspace.
In Portugal eucalyptus trees are growing in the cities and the smell of them is in the air everywhere. The long and wavy bark that peels naturally from the trees and is lying all over the ground, aroused her curiosity. She chops it by hand and kitchen utensils to process it and to get a mouldable material. So far MESA is a conceptual work and intended to show a field of application for new plant-based materials.
Properties of her material are that after it sun-dryed completely, it becomes very light weight and sturdy at the same time. As only natural components are used it is 100% biodegradable and compostable.
